Our New Normal
It's crazy to me that it has only been five months since Simone and I moved from Douglasville (metro Atlanta) to Columbus, Ga. When I look back, it seems that it's been a lifetime since that move. It has been such an entirely different season for us that truly, the old seems so former and the new keeps being new everyday. At times it feels like we've lived here, lived here in the Columbus area, our whole lives and at other times, we've only been here for a moment. Our friendships are different, ministry is different, schedules, work, even our marriage is different. We've begun settling into our new normal.
Our New Apartment
We found this incredible apartment community last November, when we were trying to figure out where we'd live, called Greystone at Riverchase. It was brand new and construction was still going on. This concerned us but we decided to rent here due to it being a cheaper option. To our surprise, we were paying less for so much. Our property managers are amazing, even feeding the community Chickfila before we all headed out to work. We have been blessed with free car detailing on property and SAM's sign ups. They take care of us and we love our "Sweet Home Alabama"!
So for us, ministry has really looked different from what we've been used to over the last several years. In fact, I've been saying this a lot: while we are both on staff at Evangel Temple, it's Simone who has been doing much more people ministry than I have - which is a huge shift! So here is really what that looks like:
My official title is, Communications Director. I oversee and manage all of the church communications at Evangel Temple while helping to create concrete styles, mediums, and branding.
Additionally, I get to help implement systems to help us better communicate internally. Moreover, I get the opportunity to also speak into our Connections Ministry!
Simone, manages the Cafe at Evangel Temple and since this only happens on Sundays, she also has a job at a local credit union. A ton of her time though is spent at the young adults ministry of Evangel Temple called theDoor. Simone has really blossomed there and is on the leadership team where she oversees hospitality (she's so good at that). She also began a small group for young adult women. It's been really cool to see her find a ministry that she loves and watch her serve!
So, it's interesting being in Columbus and in our community. Almost everything here is driven by relationship and being connected to one another. This is an essential core value for our family and so being in Columbus just works. We love being in community with people. Now, don't get me wrong it's still a little bit of a challenge to build relationships because we're still the "new guys" and just about everyone has their circles but it has been fun trying. The byproduct of only having each other is that Simone and I have really grown closer to each other.
Some of the things we try to do is go out to coffee (that's for you Jordan) with people, have the young marrieds over at our place, and really try to dig into the lives of people here.
Our cat, Kitty, has been really interesting lately! She has entered into a phase where she needs to be held or cuddled. It's like having a baby. She follows Simone wherever she goes and sometimes is waiting at the door when we get home. It's been fun watching her relationship with Simone grow (it's been a tough one)!
I left this for last because I wanted to give a backdrop to what I'd be saying here so that it makes more sense.
We have been steadily growing so close to each other. A part of our family values this year is to really affirm and confirm in each other at the deepest places our dreams and desires. Being here in Columbus has really opened us up to dreaming again!
I've been saying this a ton, it feels as though I am learning my wife for the very first time. It's a good thing! The Lord is doing amazing things in her. In fact, about a month ago, she was baptized in the Chattahoochee River and also received the Baptism of the Spirit all in the same night! When she speaks and gives advice, it's phenomenal. She loves loving people and building spaces for healing and comfort and acceptance. So it's been really cool watching all of this.
We are open to having kids. We get that question a ton. We're praying and letting The Lord guide us in that! For now, Kitty is what we have.
So that's our new normal. It's different. Fun. Exciting. Adventurous!
